In the paper age, clinicians communicated with others by handwriting notes, orders, and prescriptions. To transfer and share records, they faxed or physically handed them to colleagues. Fueled, in part, by the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, the adoption of outpatient electronic health records (EHRs) nearly doubled between 2008 and 2014. While EHRs have been linked to burnout, the promise of the digital age to improve the quality and efficiency of care still exists.
