The American Board of Family Medicine will serve as one of the co-sponsoring boards of a new subspecialty in Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM). To encourage physician development in this subspecialty, a new Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) will be available to physicians with relevant training and significant leadership responsibilities that include managing talent, time, and quality in a wide variety of practice settings. Physician leaders in community practice, hospitals, large medical groups, integrated health systems, academia, and health policy organizations will be encouraged to apply.
"We are pleased to be a co-sponsor of this new CAQ,” said ABFM President and CEO Warren Newton, MD, MPH. “In addition to the recognition and furthering of important administrative skills, this CAQ offers the potential to position family physicians as leaders in different health care delivery systems. It will offer relevant, role-specific opportunities for family physician leaders to tailor their Family Medicine Continuing Certification experience."
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recently approved the new subspecialty, and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) will serve as the administrative board. The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) will serve as co-sponsoring boards, along with ABFM.
The first HALM qualifying examination is expected to be offered in October 2024. Family physicians who receive the HALM CAQ will be required to maintain their certification by participating in and passing rigorous knowledge assessment modules and completing a systems-oriented performance improvement activity every five years.
Instructions on how to apply and eligibility requirements for current ABFM Diplomates interested in HALM certification will be posted on the ABFM website later this year.
